GA4 Launches New 'AI Assistant' Channel: How to Track LLM Traffic

Google has officially introduced a major update for Google Analytics 4 (GA4), a dedicated measurement system for tracking traffic originating from AI chatbots.


Website owners and marketers can now see how much traffic they are receiving from platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude.


According to Google, "Google Analytics now provides a dedicated way to measure and analyze traffic originating from popular AI assistants."


Previously, traffic from AI bots often leaked into "Direct" or standard "Referral" buckets, making it incredibly difficult to isolate. This update changes that by placing the data directly into a new AI Assistant channel within your Default Channel Group reports.


What Changes in Your GA4 Reports?

The update introduces specific, automated values to your traffic source dimensions whenever a user clicks through to your site from a recognized AI companion:


  • Medium: A new ai-assistant value is automatically assigned when the referrer matches a recognized AI Assistant.

  • Channel Group: These visits are neatly categorized under the new AI Assistant channel.

  • Campaign: Traffic from these sources will be automatically identified with the (ai-assistant) campaign name.
